Miller Place Board of Education Finds Savings in New Contracts

New contracts increase health care contributions for nurses, administrative and central office staff.

Miller Place Board of Education is hoping a series of new contracts will hep the school district's bottom line.

Michael Unger, presidents of Miller Place Central School District's Board of Education, announced Wednesday the board has reached new salary and benefit agreements with its school nurses, administrators and non-union central office staff.  The contracts will cover the district over the upcoming 4 - 5 years.

The newly negotiated contracts between the school district and its employees keep annual salary raises at less than 1 percent per year while steadily increasing their health care contributions.

“We recognize the contributions our employees are making to the fiscal health of our District.  We appreciate their understanding of the District’s need to keep employee salary and benefit costs under control," Unger said. "It is with the outstanding efforts of these dedicated District employees, along with our teachers and the support of our community, that Miller Place continues to deliver an exceptional educational program to our students.”

The administrators union has agreed to a 5-year contract that promises an annual salary increase of  0.4 percent, 0.6 percent, 0.8 percent, 0.9 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. Over the 5-year contract, individuals' health care contributions will gradually increase to 20 percent.

For non-union administrators, the new contracts span 3 to 4 years with an annual salary increase ranging from 0.4 percent to 0.9 percent. The administrators' health care contributions will gradually increase to 19 percent.

The school board and non-unionized central office support staff agreed to a 4-year contract with annual salary increases of 0.4 percent to 0.9 percent. A staff member's health care contribution will gradually increase to 15 percent. All new hires will pay 15 percent of their health care insurance immediately.

The school nurses have a new 4-year contract that features salary raises ranging from 0.4 percent to 0.9 percent yearly. Over the next four years, health care contributions will gradually increased to 15 percent with all new hires contributing 15 percent immediately.

"These agreements support the sound, fiscally responsible foundation for our district’s long-term stability we have worked very hard to establish," Unger said.

An estimate of how much these new contracts will save the school district was not available on Wednesday afternoon.
