Rocky Point Farmers Market

Next Sunday, the 12th is Mother's Day.  It's also the first day of the Rocky Point Farmers Market.  Each Sunday from the 12th of May until late November local food producers and artisans will gather at the market from 8 am to 1 pm to make their wares available for purchase.

Yesterday afternoon, I went to Kreators (on 25A in Mt Sinai) to watch a soccer match.  While I was there a few of the patrons started talking about another big box store moving into our area.  “They’re killing the local businesses,” said one man.  “I don’t understand it,” said another.  “Why would you let these places in?  They’re a cancer.”

Interesting, I thought.  People know the dangers of creeping corporate consumerism, but what can we do?  How do we resist?  One way is through small acts of choice.  Choose the local option over the imported “box store” option.

Supporting the Rocky Point Farmers Market is one way you can help enrich the community you live in.  The food available at the market is grown on Long Island, by people who live in Long Island.  The crafts that you’ll find at the market have been handmade by one of your neighbors.  Even the beer you buy by the growler at the market has been made in your town.

When you are making your shopping list for the week, keep in mind that you can probably find most of what you want to eat at the market: veggies, meat, cheese, fruit, and (of course) beer.

We’ll see you next Sunday at the market.  It’s at the corner of Broadway and Prince in Rocky Point.
