Letter: Rocky Point Farmers' Market Growing Each Week

Rocky Point Civic Board member Joan Sele talks about the newly implemented Farmers' Market.

The following was submitted by Joan Sele, Rocky Point Civic Association board member.

The Rocky Point Farmers' Market on Sunday mornings on Prince Road and Broadway has only been in existence since May 13, but has been growing each week. The number of vendors has more than doubled and more are expected to participate. As word has quickly spread around town, community members have been coming and purchasing some of the many offerings from local vendors.

During the past six weeks, the variety of offerings has increased. The farm and agriculture vendors include Monarch Landing, representing three farmers, selling freshly picked, locally grown asparagus, as well as yogurt and cheese from Goodale; Natural Earth Farms has freshly picked vegetables; Sunburst Shrubs has a wonderful selection of plants, including berry bushes. Maria also kindly and generously donated hosta plants to help beautify the area on Prince Road. Our own has a selection of nuts and local honey.

On June 17, Tom’s Deep Roots Farm from Orient came with fresh vegetables and eggs and free range chicken. Of special interest to many were the naturally grass fed meats and chicken from our local Rocky Pointers and Fort Ann, NY family.

There are also local vendors selling handmade soaps and jewelry, as well as Justin, from “A Gentler Life” with his beautifully handcrafted untreated cedar planters and bird houses.

Not to be overlooked are the local community organizations displaying informative materials and cookbooks.  Visitors also had the pleasure of listening to the music of two guitarists, who really helped set a friendly, uplifting mood.

It can be said that this event has brought back a warm, small town flavor to this little community. It has been a delightful place to meet and chat with neighbors who don’t often get to see one another, given the busy lives so many residents have.
