DEC: Shellfishing Temporarily Closed After July 4
Shellfishing will be temporarily closed across 243-acres of Port Jefferson Harbor starting on the Fourth of July, the state's Department of Environmental Conservation said. The closure is expected to last until July 11.

Nesconset Summer Concert Series Starts

The sixth annual Nesconset Summer Concert Series is kicking off. The series started July 2.

Sponsored by the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce and Legis. John Kennedy Jr., R-Nesconset, residents can watch six free concerts on Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. in July and August.

Roadside Activists Say Impeach Obama

A stand was set up on Tuesday morning outside of the 7-Eleven on Route 25a in Kings Park by members of a political action committee who said the'd like to see President Barack Obama impeached.

Matt Guice and Daniel Burke, members of LaRouche PAC, are hoping to gain some support and trumpet the political platform of Lyndon LaRouche, an eight-time presidential candidate, now 90, from the mid 70's until 2004.

FEMA Reimburses Smithtown $6.2M for Sandy Cleanup

Smithtown Town officials are eagerly waiting the arrival of a $6.2 million check that will help pay off debts from Hurricane Sandy.
 
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has agreed to reimburse the town for 90 percent of the $6.9 million Smithtown officials claim was spent on collecting, removing and disposing debris after Sandy, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer's office announced. It does not include rebuilding and restoration funds.

State Lawmakers Approve Tax-Free Zones Around SUNY Campuses

With the passage of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's "START-UP NY" bill in June, New York State is set to enact tax-free commerce zones on and immediately surrounding SUNY campuses. The governor's "Tax-Free NY" initiative, introduced a few weeks ago, has been incorporated into START-UP NY, a package of legislation intended to jump-start the upstate New York economy, and is meant to stimulate economic growth and job growth around SUNY and CUNY campuses across the state.

The new law facilitates tax breaks – such as no corporate taxes, income taxes, or property taxes – for new businesses, or businesses from out-of-state that move to New York, that start up on SUNY campuses or within one mile of the campuses, taking up to 200,000 square feet of commercial space.
