PHOTOS: Private Road Collapses in Sound Beach

Hilltop Drive in Scott's Beach Surf Club began collapsing over the weekend due to heavy rains.

Hilltop Drive in Scott's Beach Surf Club in Sound Beach is closed until further notice due to collapsing from the heavy rains over the weekend.

According to a sign posted by the Scott's Beach Board, the rain has caused "major undermining and collapse of many areas."

The possibility of further collapsing has caused the Board to close the road until further notice.

these roads are already in bad disrepair prior to this rain... Where is our Tax dollars being spent?
Mark Wilson August 16, 2011 at 01:25 PM
Excuse me, but the story said "PRIVATE ROAD" ! IF you are a Scott's Beach Board resident, you deserve to gripe ! If you are a Town of Brookhaven resident, thank God that you are not ponying up your tax dollars to a private entity that is CHEAP !
localnews August 16, 2011 at 01:55 PM
Are all these "private" beaches really private, or are the taxpayers of Brookhaven paying for some amenities accorded to only a few?

Have you noticed ALL of the new drains on Harbor Beach Road...BEFORE the triangle intersection on your left, going into Cedar Beach ? Must be about six of them, so far as of this weekend ? Talk about a waste of money ?

Do you get the feeling, that they seem very anxious for Town money be spent ON THEIR PROPERTY ? At one time, ACCORDING TO THEIR OWN WORDS, there was a developer who was putting together a package for a community adjacent to Scott's Beach Club Inc., and the developer wrote a letter to Scotts Beach Club Inc., that ", the Scott’s Beach Board of Directors received a letter from the attorney for the project site owner stating that “over land and direct discharge waters” from Scott’s Beach property is causing “severe erosion and monetary damage”. The letter requests that Scott’s Beach install drainage structures to prevent its stormwater from entering the site." At this point, of the story, I will let the writer, of the "SBC Annual Meeting 6-20-09, continue with their attempt to fool you... "To avoid the enormous expense of installing drainage structures, perhaps it is better to ask the Town of Brookhaven to purchase the property so it remains a natural recharge basin. This may also mitigate the need for the Town itself to install additional drainage structures since it appears that the overwhelming amount of stormwater enters the site via Lower Rock Point Road and is generated on multiple Town-owned roads. It may be possible that Town and County funding set aside for land preservation may be combined with Town Highway Department funds to purchase the property." http://www.scottsbeachclubinc.org/files/toussie.pdf Must be nice !

In addition, just TRY to get into their DUMPY BEACH FRONT ! At the end of WOODHULL LANDING ROAD, you will be met with NO PARKING NO NIGHT FISHING signs and usually in the evening, a police officer writing tickets ! By the by...want to know who the Scotts Beach Club Inc. wanted you to write to for the "hand out" ? Or, in their own words... "The three officials listed in the top row below (Jane Bonner, Mark Lesko and John Rouse) are perhaps the most important to contact.. Sonny, are you a Scotts Beach Club resident ? See the posts below...the Scotts Beach Club Inc. has known about the drainage problems for two years now, and apparently, has been scheming ever since to get Town Tax Payers to pay for THEIR PROBLEM !
Sonny Vivonetto August 16, 2011 at 05:47 PM
I did not realize this was a private road..... Sorry .... there are plenty of Brookhaven Town Roads in as poor condition as this and I see them repaving roads that are in good condition.. what is up with that.....?
Mark Wilson August 16, 2011 at 05:56 PM
Sonny, It's who you know. Scotts Beach Club INC. knows who to go to. Here with Scotts Beach Club INC., they have a private "club" community, and with this photo, want to get the Town with YOUR tax dollars, to repair it ! You can't use their beach front, or park in the street in front of the entrance, but it's OK for you and me to pay for the road problem, that THEY ADMIT is their problem and they knew about it for two years now ! The local Town Board councilwoman, Jane Bonner, hopes you don't read about this scam...and as it is an election year, you can bet, the Town will be stuck with this road repair soon. But you can't go to their beach OR park in front of the entrance on a public street !
Mark Wilson August 16, 2011 at 06:16 PM
Sonny, no Sorry's ! Someone doesn't want you to know it's a private community. This is a lame attempt, here, to obscure the Truth. Can you blame them ? What a deal ! It's worth it for them and their sponsor, for the price it would cost THEM, and leaving you and I with the cost of this repair...and setting the custom for them to "jam in" other things. Betcha when Bonner does it, you won't know about it !
Mark Wilson August 16, 2011 at 06:47 PM
It's private when you want to use their beach front, and when you park on a street in front of their DUMPY beach. It's public when they want the Town to pay for street repairs like this. Read the words of their thoughts on the drainage problem... " It may be possible that Town and County funding set aside for land preservation may be combined with Town Highway Department funds to purchase the property." They know JANE BONNER is there to shill for them, with the "Environmentalist" and "preservation" labels, because they know Voters won't look at the scam, further than the end of their noses...and reading innocuous stories like this. Look at the photos and you will jump to incorrect assumptions...but that's ok, they will JAM it through !

And who is really able to access the so-called "Town of Brookhaven" beach (try to see the tucked-away sign, though) at Shoreham? Those with shorefront property,I guess.
Mark Wilson August 16, 2011 at 07:18 PM
Here's how Scotts Beach Club Inc. works, in terms of repairs..... Each property owner pays annual dues, which permits the Board to meet the expenses of operating and maintaining the community. Some of these expenses include repair and maintenance of our roads, electric and water utilities, taxes on community property, and insurance coverage. http://www.scottsbeachclubinc.org/main/

The scam is this : They "find" a choice piece of private property that's about to be coming up for sale. They get a shill "Environmentalist" Pol like Bonner to slap a "preservation" or "environmental" label on it. The property goes out of general circulation, for "preservation". They find a "developer" and use them as a "front" to "develope" it for commercial use. After a decent interval of time, the Town, and the Usual Suspects Above ALL get a "ta$te" of the land sale, when the "developer" "kicks back" as "campaign contributions" to themselves. Everyone gets a photo op, and a big campaign contribution. Here's what happened to another "choice" property, VERY close to these Cheap, Scotts Beach Club INC. people ! http://northshoresun.timesreview.com/2010/12/3798/county-town-announce-purchase-of-vassilaros-property/

How many Brookhaven residents don't want one cent of their tax dollars paying for property, beachfront rights, or any amenities that a select few have been able to commandeer as "private" by ingratiating themselves with politicians who are in their pockets? This ball is in the media's court - politicians don't police themselves.

Unfortunately, the Local Pols have a "lock" on doing what they want to do here. Corruption is THAT ingrained in our local life. The Culture of Corruption is so ingrained in this Town's "way of doing things", the Tax Payers are being held captive by it. Bonner's recent "dirty tricks" against Raymond Negron's failed candidacy, is a sign of just how POWERFUL, CORRUPTION IS a way of Life, for Local Pols here...NOW is seems that it just doesn't matter what political party you are in, because entry into one of them, these days is, bascially, entry into a special club where it's the LIcense To Steal is conferred upon those actually recruited to carry the tradition on. This "club" makes Corruption so formalized and ingrained a "normal process" that it's stronger than "Our Thing" ever was. The only Light I see at the end of this CORRUPT TUNNEL, is IF a tipping point is reached in our current Economic Crisis, by Tax Payers and Voters, where they just can't take it any more, and a GENUINE "grass roots" Reform Movement springs up and one by one these FAKE, PHONY, FRAUDULENT politicians are eliminated in the voting booth. It has to start with one person that is NOT in the System. And then a political target of Tax Payer Ire has to be chosen, where this pol is virtually run out of Town by Tax Payers, so reviled by their Corruption,, that they are not even allowed in the periphery of Town life. The others like them, would be cowed by their example..
Mark Wilson August 17, 2011 at 06:36 AM
AND localnews, it's not that we don't want to pay for it...we are going to pay for it, because our SLEEZY Local Pols are going to jam it through, under the cover of night on us !
