RCA Conservation Area Hit By Brush Fire

Rocky Point, Miller Place and Sound Beach among eight fire departments called to the scene.

A brush fire hit the RCA Conservation Area on Wednesday afternoon, drawing area fire departments to the scene to quell the flame before it spread to surrounding woods.

The Rocky Point Fire Department received the call at 1:49 p.m. Other fire departments responding to the call were: Sound Beach, Miller Place, Wading River, Ridge, Middle Island, Center Moriches and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Police blocked traffic a distance from the location of the fire - Nature's Lane and Jonah Road - in the vicinity of Whisky Road and Miller Place-Yaphank Road.

The dispatcher for the Rocky Point FD said, "The fire was about 100 feet into the woods, and was brought under control a 3:36 p.m."

Chief John Drew of the Sound Beach Fire Department said his department arrived at the fire at 2:20 p.m. and was there until 4 p.m.

The area remained cordoned off from traffic well after the fire was pronounced under control. As of late afternoon the cause of the fire was undetermined.
