After reaching its goal of $850,000 in just over a week and a half, the viral fundraiser on indiegogo.com supporting a Nikola Tesla museum at Wardenclyffe in Shoreham finished up with $1,370,511.
The fundraiser allowed the Shoreham non-profit group Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe to secure a matching grant of $850K, and additional funds will all be put into the development of the museum.
The cause, started by web-comic creator Matt Inman, better known as The Oatmeal, was one of the largest ever on indiegogo.com. It saw over $450,000 raised in 24 hours from over 100 countries and surpassed its goal after a $33,333 donation by the indie filmmakers of “Fragments From Olympus-The Vision of Nikola Tesla."
"It shows the power of the internet," president of the non-profit Jane Alcorn told Patch earlier. "We’ve learned that you shouldn’t give up, because you never know if the next person you reach out to will be the one to make your dream happen."
