Whiz Kid: Lauren Cummins Spreads Love, Energy and Power

Cummins, diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis at age two, fights on and spreads joy by creating beaded bracelets.

Name: Lauren Cummins - Age: 13

School:  North Country Road Middle School

Whiz Kids' Accomplishment:  At the age of two, Cummins was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, also known as NF1 -- a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow in the nervous system. She gradually lost her vision due to a tumor on her optic nerve and last year she was hospitalized in New York City for almost six months where she endured 14 surgeries, radiation and acute rehabilitation. She was able to fight through and return home, and while she is not yet able to return to school, she is tutored at home. She receives speech, physical and occupational therapies and works hard day in and day out to get stronger.  Those close to her know she does not complain about her situation. She is always looking to brighten the days of other people and is clearly an inspiration to anyone she comes in contact with. Cummins is not only a Miller Place-Rocky Point Whiz Kid, but a Whiz Kid the world over.

Whiz Kid's Key to Awesomeness:  Between rehabilitation and home schooling, Cummins is sure to find time to do other things she loves, and making beaded healing bracelets is one of those things. She enjoys giving them to people, especially people who are sick or sad, to brighten their day. She says she puts love, energy and power into each bead.  You can find more information on Cummins, get a bracelet of your own and sign her guest book on her website -- laurensvision.com.
