Local Eateries Support Stony Brook Children's Hospital

Restaurants sent part of the proceeds from a special menu this week to the hospital.

Three local restaurants are supporting children in need this week with price-fix menus that send part of their proceeds to Stony Brook University Medical Center's Children's Hospital.

Blond Restaurant and La Casa Restaurant in Miller Place, along with the Sea Basin in Rocky Point, are all serving three-course meals for $29.99, $5 of which goes to the children's hospital, until Sunday to benefit the cause.

Blond owner Sammy Melovic said about 40 percent of customers have taken advantage of the promotion, which started last Sunday.

“It’s for a really good local cause,” Melovic said of why his restaurant chose to participate. “It’s good to give back to the community.”

He added his children have been patients at the children's hospital in the past and that many of the hospital employees are good customers.

Blond is offering four appetizers, four entrees and three deserts as part of the promotion, while the nearby Sea Basin has three appetizers, three entrees and two deserts on the price-fix menu this week.

La Casa is offering either fried ravioli, fresh mozzerela and tomatoes, or stuffed mushrooms as appetizers; chicken marsala, eggplant rollatini, or veal piccata as entrees; and cannolis or tartufo for desert, according to Rich Logrippo, one of the owners at La Casa.

Logrippo said his restaurant is always willing to help the community and local children, and is also donating meals to a food tasting that will benefit cancer research at Mather Hospital in February. “It’s always good to help the community,” he added.

La Casa has a sign in the window advertising the promotion and customers get a flier when they are seated at their table.

“We think it will do well,” Logrippo said. “Hopefully we sell 100 of them.”

The local eateries join 30 across Long Island supporting Stony Brook's children's hospital, which sees more than 7,000 children and adolescents each year.

While sales were steady early this week, the recent snowstorm, which dumped more than a foot of snow on the local area, slowed overall business and business for the promotion Wednesday night, Melovic said.

Logripo also said the mid-week snow put a damper on sales, but hoped it would pick up over the weekend.

"Hopefully business will be better than it was tonight," Melovic laughed, referring to Wednesday. "I wish I had a crystal ball."
