Christmas Traditions: Paying it Forward

Traditions....and paying it forward.

I am sitting here, drinking hot chocolate (yes, of course with whipped cream!), listening to Christmas music on WALK radio, thinking of all the things yet be accomlished before the big day. I've been Elf'd (as I mentioned in a previous blog) and my little one is enjoying the Elf on a Shelf.

Elf on a Shelf is a book, that comes with an elf. The Elf needs to be named, by you! You read the book, and each night the Elf uses his magic to move to different parts of the house, sometimes getting into trouble. The best part is the kids can't touch him or he will lose his magic! The possibilities are endless of where he will be next. Of course, you can purchase a skirt, and make your Elf an Elfette. Check out the website, http://www.elfontheshelf.com/ for more information. I was lucky enough to find one at Target a few weeks ago.

So, the cookies have yet to be baked, the cards, well, they may be sent late, but the important thing (at least to me) about the Christmas holiday is that you are enjoying the decorating, gift wrapping, or maybe making a gift for someone with your very own hands.  I always enjoy making an ornament or craft with my Girl Scout Troop...they are so proud of what they make!

This year, I decided to step it up a notch with paying it forward. Instead of donating a gift or two to someone who could use it, I also helped coordinate the Girl Scout Service Unit's adopted families. It was alot of hours, but so worth it.  I have met new people and have seen generosity like never before.

My heart is so filled with Christmas spirit, and a renewed sense of community.  Originally we set out to adopt five families, more than ever before. Yes, there were doubting Thomas's, but in the end I heard of more and more people who really needed a lift. We were able to help EIGHT families this year, and I couldn't have done it without the outpouring of generosity from the community. One of our Leaders works at , and instead of them doing a grab bag, they each put money in an envelope and sent it to help us out. I was able to buy gift cards for the grocery store, in addition to the toys and clothes for the families. Another person whom I had just met offered a large gift from a friend. Can you imagine, that was on the wishlist of one of the kids? I truly believe that was meant to be.

As a friend of mine recently posted on Facebook, take a moment to be grateful for what you have. A roof over you head, a hot meal, your health, your family and friends. Then, take a moment to pay it forward to someone else. Whether it be to let another car in at a traffic merge, holding the door for someone, or just smiling.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and if you don't celebrate Christmas, maybe it's Hanukkah, or something else...happy holidays! I am looking forward to 2012 and hope it's a happy and healthy one for all. God Bless, and don't forget to pay it forward!
