Backyard Shack Gutted in Early Morning Blaze

Sound Beach and Rocky Point Fire Departments responded to the fire on Stewart Road.

Sound Beach and Rocky Point firefighters doused a fire early Monday morning, which gutted a backyard entertainment shack behind a Sound Beach home.

According to Sound Beach Fire Chief Tom Sternberg, the detached structure at 14 Stewart Rd. – which he said contained a fridge, a tiki bar, and grill – was fully engulfed upon his department's arrival. The call came in shortly before 6:30 a.m., and the fire appeared to cause damage to the deck between the shack and the house.

Sternberg said his department sent one engine, as did neighboring Rocky Point Fire Department, calling out about 20 firefighters in total. While the fire didn't spread to the home, about 20 feet away, firefighters did hose down the home to cool it down before anything became an issue in the house.

No injuries were reported in the incident, the cause of which remains under investigation.

Fire crews were wrapped up around 8:30 a.m., Sternberg said.
