UPDATE: Downed Utility Pole Causes Property Damage, Accidents and Delays

One person sent to Mather Hospital after riding into wires that dropped onto 25a after pole was broken.

A utility pole in the parking lot of the Miller Place Plaza off Route 25a in Miller Place was downed early Monday morning, causing delays on 25a due to a downed wire in the road along with property damage.

According to reports, some cars were unable to avoid the wires after they were downed. There were no serious injuries but one person was sent to in Port Jefferson by Miller Place Rescue as a precautionary measure.

Suffolk Police have confirmed that a garbage truck driving in the parking lot in the Miller Place Plaza caught the wires which snapped the pole, causing damage to one store and dropping the wires down onto the road.

"The garbage truck was coming from one parking lot to the other and caught the wires going through two buildings," said Joe Agugliaro, the manager of the Subway located in the Plaza, although he did not witness the incident. "At that point it snapped the telephone pole, which broke part of the building."

Suffolk Police and the Long Island Power Authority were called around 5:30 this morning to direct traffic and clear up the downed wire. The roads were cleared in about 20 minutes, according to Suffolk Police.
