Most of these accidents are the fault of the car drivers. It is my opinion that they dont give a damm. I ride and see them all the time texting, eating hamburgers and one was actually trying to get someout of the back seat while driving. If I had my way anyone involved in an accident while on a stupid cell phone would be give jail time. This is warranted because a lot of people cant walk and chew gum at the same time let alone drive and use a cell phone.

And though I'm sure you are a very safe motorcycle driver many are not. For Instance: The rice rocket wheelies on 25A all summer long. For Instance: A motorcylist and his passenger passing all stopped traffic by riding the double yellow middle line heading down to the carnival at Cedar Beach last night. Stopped traffic is not a green light for a motorcycle right of way. Dumb is Dumb whether texting while driving a car or acting like a fool on a bike. We all need to look out for each other

That entire intersection needs no right turns on red. There are way too many cars turning and going in and out of the gas stations and 7-11

Agreed, the intersection is a mess! It's been survival of the fittest and dumbest for years!

A very busy intersection indeed, in addition to all the businesses at the four corners with patrons entering and exiting. Suggestion: 1. Add no turn on red at each of the four corners. 2. The left turn green arrows should be followed by yellow arrows and then red arrows. 3. But the best thing would be to always remember the fact that when you are driving a car or a motorcycle, you are driving a weapon. Simply put, pay attention!

How do we get 'the powers that be' to look at the history of accidents and make some changes?
Anthony Russo May 21, 2012 at 01:03 AM
A Russo I know in the NYPD the executive officer of the command must review accidents on a monthly basis in his command at traffiic stat meetings. An intersection like this one would be given special attention at the times these accidents are happening. (Mostly during the daytime hours). I never see the 6th pct at this spot unless they are taking a report. This is a codition that needs monitoring by the 6th pct. If that doesn't help lower the accidents NYS Dept of Transportation will have to do a study at this intersection to see what improvements should be made. Unfortunately they will wait for a fatality to happen and then take action What a Joke!!!

I constantly see cars Eastbound on 25A riding up the shoulder to make the right turn onto Miller Place Rd. Southbound. Even though a right on red is prohibited there, many still make it anyway. Police used to hide behind the white fence between the BP station and McDonalds to catch these motorists but I haven't seen it in a long time. Even when people stop for the light, they pull up too far, blocking the crosswalk. If there were ever an intersection where a red light camera was needed, this would be one. Not to mention better enforcement of the 45 mph speed limit along this stretch of road.

I believe there was a modern traffic circle was planned at one point. Not sure what happened with that. Modern traffic circles seem like they would fix a lot of issues with traffic on 25a too. Going from miller place to smith town is a nightmare with all the lights.

I think these suggestions will only back up the intersection worse than it already is. As mentioned above making every corner a "no turn on red" will not stop the lawbreakers, and those of us that don't text/eat/shave/apply makeup while driving will have to suffer while the lawbreakers continue to do what they do. I heard from a witness that saw the accident that this motorcyclist ran the red light. None of the above suggestions will prevent idiots from continuing to do what they do. The problem is there is no other easy way out to 25a for all of the people who live south of 25a on MP road (look at a map and you'll see what I mean). There is too much volume at this intersection. Fix this and you may start to alleviate the problem.

People are too high on xanax, percocet, vicodin and various other substances to handle a trafic circle. Plus, it's difficult to maintain a vehicle in a turn while texting. People can barely drive in a straight line nowadays, I can't imagine they would be able to handle a traffic circle. All joking aside, I'm not sure it would be feasible at that intersection with the traffic volume there. They may have to expand into the corner properties (2 gas stations,7-11, Starbucks) also, not sure how that would work...that might be why it never happened...who knows. Bottom line is that people are not paying attention anymore while they drive, there are too many distractions. Also, there are too many selfish idiots who think they are not subject to the rules of the road because their time is more important that everyone else's. I love stopping half into the shoulder when I see these people trying to cut ahead of everyone by driving in the shoulder...you know they have the nerve to honk at me? They think they're in the right! I just sit there and laugh...

Unfortunately, NYers do not know how to drive in traffic circles as we have so few of them. I'm not sure this would alleviate any problems but would just cause huge back-ups and traffic, which we already have plenty of on 25A.
