Three-Car Crash Sends 2 to Hospital

Crash occurred at intersection of Route 25A and Miller Place Road.

Two individuals were sent to the hospital Saturday night after a car crash on Route 25, according to the Miller Place Fire Department.

MPFD First Assistant Chief Kyle Markott said one individual was sent to St. Charles Hospital, and another to Mather Hospital after a crash occurred on Route 25A, near Miller Place Road, around 10:45 p.m.

Suffolk County Police said three cars were involved in the accident, though no serious injuries were reported.

According to Markott, "This continues to be a very busy intersection for accidents requiring the MPFD response."

The light on Miller Place Road heading north changes to a green arrow allowing a left turn....Cars misinterpret that to be its OK to go straight.....Ive seen cars head north right through the red light.20 times MOVE THE ARROW over.....Its confusing to some

If a green arrow pointing to the left confuses someone into thinking it is OK to go straight, don't move the arrow, take their license away because they don't belong behind the wheel. Make that intersection "No Turn On Red' for all 4 corners and remind people you have to make right turns into the right lane and left turns into the left lane.

The green arrow hangs on the same light as the red light......Ive seen many people go through the red light the second the top arrow changes green.....The green arrow needs to hang on a seperate light to the left of the stop light...I saw a truck towing a boat come right through the red light the other day...it missed me by inches. I pointed up to the red light and the guy with the boat aqctually thought he was doing nothing wrong

Paul, please send this information to the town in the form of a letter. I'm not too familiar with this intersection, but you may wind up saving a life.

I've said it before, why is it every other intersection on 347 except for Miller Place Rd and Rocky Point Rd have RED arrows or NO TURN ON RED? Although this accident doesn't look like it involved the light (I came thru there after rescue arrived) it was further west of the light but what does it take to change the traffic flow? I believe people are just so used to other traffic controls so when they see the green arrow they aren't paying attention. They think the green arrow and the straight are usually green at the same time. Same for all the other intersections that have RED left turn arrows. Who has the authority to make these changes? This is a State road who do we complain to Paul?

There was actually 4 cars involved in this accident. Mine was the 4th. Luckily I was not hurt and there was little damage to my car,but it had nothing to do with the turn signal. We weren't even at a full stop yet. I don't know what caused this accident to happen, although,I will say that since the light was put in at the Friendly's shopping center traffic at that corner has been very heavy. I think because of that there is a lack of patience when going through that area.

Stupidity is not an accident. All these crashes involve idiot drivers.

The speed limit is 30 mph. Try observing it!
Rich July 23, 2012 at 11:39 PM
The speed limit on 25A in this area is 45 mph. Those who try to observe it nearly get run off the road. The only way to change the behavior of people is to hit them in their wallets. Have the police enforce the speed limit. Since most of the traffic through this intersection is local residents who travel through it many times a day, the installation of Red Light Cameras will cause people to be a lot more cautious in and around this intersection because they will know the cameras are there and they don't want to pay the fine. No Turn On Red signs on all 4 corners will also help. If anyone knows how to get these things implemented, please share the info. Phone calls to the 6th Precinct have had no effect.

No Turn On Red signs will not stop the idiots who ignore the signs, and will back up an already backed-up intersection even more. There is no reason why a person can't make a right on red if they pay attention, get off the percocet and xanax, and stop texting. Put all the signs and red light cameras you want...selfish morons will still ignore it all, blow the lights, go through the signs, and leave the rest of us law-abiding drivers waiting longer to get through the intersection. The underlying problem at this intersection is the volume...there is no other way out to 25A for a very large area unless you go all the way around on Coram-Mt Sinai Road. This problem won't go away until this is fixed.

You are right. Driving today I noticed three different people texting and the way some of these idiots drive can only be explained by them being high. What you don't seem to understand that by texting and driving you are not paying attention and therefore putting other people at risk over a stupid text message. I honestly think they should really make texting and driving as illegal as a DWI since it is just as deadly.
Steve July 24, 2012 at 10:44 PM
Yes Rich, the speed limit is 45 on 25A but it is 30 on Miller Place Road. Maybe there should be no turns at the intersection at all during peak hours. It works in Manhattan.
Linda July 30, 2012 at 08:20 AM
It think there should be more lights going west to slow down that traffic. People get to a pretty good clip going from east to west because the last light before this intersection is some distance. Lights, cameras = less action in this case!
