Toddler Drowns in Backyard Pond in Sound Beach

Sound Beach toddler drowns after falling into backyard pond.

A Sound Beach toddler has drowned in his backyard pond Saturday evening, according to Suffolk Police.

Seventh Precinct officers and Sound Beach Rescue Squad responded to Crane Neck Drive in Sound Beach after a 911 call reporting that a child had fallen into the backyard pond.

When police arrived, the 22-month-old boy had already been removed from the pond but was not breathing and unresponsive. The boy’s father had begun CPR and Sound Beach Rescue personnel continued efforts while bringing the child to St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Suffolk County Police Homicide Section is investigating the incident and are reporting that the drowning appears to be accidental at this time.
