Town to Unveil Sound Beach Traffic Plan

Sound Beach Civic Association president said traffic-calming project has been in the works for six years.

The Sound Beach Civic Association is getting a visit it's been waiting on for six years at Monday's monthly meeting.

Officials from the Town of Brookhaven will be at the gathering to unveil final plans for a traffic-calming project on New York Avenue and Sound Beach Boulevard.

Sound Beach Civic president William Pellenz said the project, which was announced six years ago, is using a grant from New York state and is aimed at reducing speed along New York Avenue, a 30 mph zone where speed limits are often ignored.

"It's a 30 mph speed limit but the road kind of meanders - it's a little wide - and people go 50 mph," Pellenz said. "It's all neighborhoods and the church, and then when they get to the village, they're still speeding through there."

Possible changes to the area include adding sidewalks to narrow the roadway, installing safety crosswalks and putting in a center median, according to Pellenz.

The modifications would only stretch as far as St. Louis de Montfort Church to the west, and Pellenz said extending them to Echo Avenue will be a future project for the area.

For now, he's pleased the final plans will finally be completed and said the town will also announce at the meeting when it intends to break ground on the project.

"It's the end of a long, long journey from when we first found out they were doing it," he said. "It's our community and we'd like to see how our input has affected what they're doing."
