Award Winners in Rocky Point School District

Teachers, students earn awards.

students were named winners in a National Dental Video contest and teacher Catherine Conner recently received a Mentoring Achievement Award from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island.

Under the direction of Technology Integration Specialist Laurie Varriale, reading teacher Peter Costa, art teacher Katerina Kyriakakis, and Executive Director of Educational Services Susan Wilson, students in Joy Abbato's third-grade class wrote and filmed a video entitled “Pearly Whites” which won first placethe New York State Dental Health Association Contest for their age group. The video was not only shared districtwide via Safari Montage’s Creation Station, but was submitted to the NYS Dental Association’s Reel Smiles Video Contest.

“We are all so proud of these students,” Varriale stated in a release. “They have successfully recorded a positive dental health message for all of their peers to learn from.”

Ms. Conner was recognized for her efforts in helping to continue the goals of the Mentor and Mentee (M&M) program since its inception in the 2006-2007 school year. She meets with a young mentee once a week.

As a result of her award, FJC will receive a $100 donation from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island to the M & M program in her name.
