Issues Reported in Comptroller's Audit of Miller Place School District

Retirement reporting and service days for part-time custodians targeted in audit, which took place during the 2009-'10 school year.

An audit of the by the New York State Comptroller's Office revealed issues with retirement reporting, which have been reported to the district.

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced the completion of the Miller Place School District's audit Friday.

According to the office, Miller Place district officials did not implement formal procedures for retirement reporting, and the reports prepared by a payroll clerk submitted to the New York State Loan and Retirement System were not reviewed for accuracy or approved by an appropriate official.

As a result of these innacuracies, five employees received service credit for 534.3 days they did not earn, and NYSLRS was notified of the errors.

In a letter of response from Board of Education President John Magnani and Superintendent Susan Hodun, the district outlined a Corrective Action Plan for the audit's recommendation's.

In the plan, the district announced that as of July 1 they would have the appropriate official review the Employees Retirement System Report and contact the ERS to request guidance on correction filed reports. The Board of Education will also review formally establishing a Standard Workday for salaried part-time positions.
