What Should Miller Place Schools Do in Order to Retain Programs?

While vital academic and extracurricular programs on the line, what should the district do to find the money to save them?

The numerous cuts of important academic and extracurricular programs in the Miller Place School District proposed budget have caused concern among parents, students and community members.

At Wednesday's second budget workshop, many suggestions were made in order to fine the money needed to retain these programs, something the board has said they intend to try to do.

As Board Trustee Brian Neyland pointed out, the elimination of the North Country Road Middle School athletic program and eight clubs at both the high school and middle school results in a savings of $257,065, less than one-third of one percent of the entire budget. Staffing and instructional program reductions save just over $1.9 million.

Among the suggestions at Wednesday's meeting was renegotiating the teacher's contract, and Superintendent Susan Hodun confirmed that the teachers and administration are in talks.

Board trustee Ann O'Brien also asked the community to share their thoughts on piercing the tax cap, something not done in the currently proposed budget.
