Whiz Kid: Carleen Altinock to Study Engineering at Cornell

Ranked at the top of her class, the Miller Place senior will study engineering

Name: Carleen Altinock - Age 17

School: - Grade 12

Accomplishments: Currently ranked seventh in her class, Altinock is headed to Cornell University in the fall. While a student at MPHS, she took ten Advanced Placement (AP) classes and earned the College Board's AP Scholar with Distinction Award. She has been on the high honor roll for every quarter of her high school career and has received the award for General Academic Excellence each year.

Altinock played the oboe in the concert and symphonic concert bands and is a member of the National Honor Society, currently serving as the Vice President, and the Italian Foreign Language Honor Society, currently serving as the Event Coordinator.

The senior has been a setter on the high school volleyball team for four years, three of which she played at the Varsity level. In 2010 she received the All League, All County and Academic All County Awards for volleyball. In the spring season she played for the high school's Lacrosse team for four years, two at the Varsity level. She was the recipient of the Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award in 2011, a prestigious award that honors leadership, academic excellence and physical fitness.

As a volunteer, she has put in over 300 hours at . She has participated in the Dig Pink Volleyball fundraiser for the past four years, which raises money for breast cancer research and awareness, as well as the high school's Red Cross Blood Drive. 

Altinock has been employed at Bagel Buddies in Wading River and enjoys reading, writing and snowboarding in her free time. At Cornell University, she plans to pursue a career in engineering and hopes to join in caving and rock climbing activities through their Outdoors Club, as well as continue to try playing some volleyball.
