Whiz Kid: Miller Place Senior a Scholar In and Out of the Classroom

Jessica Post has achieved numerous awards for her academic excellence and is an avid volunteer in the community.

Name: Jessica Post - Age 17

School: Miller Place High School - Senior

Accomplishments: Jessica has been on the high honor roll at Miller Place High School since her freshman year and has received the Award for General Academic Excellence.  She will have taken six Advanced Placement (A.P.) or College courses during her high school career. She was also the recipient of the College Board's A.P. Scholar Award.  

The senior is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society for Spanish, the National Honor Society, Service Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Jessica has been a Girl Scout since elementary school, earning the Bronze Award for her work with the Two Day Long Island Breast Cancer Walk, and her Silver Award by maintaining a planting area for three years at Heritage Park. As a senior, she is working on her Gold Award project, involving literacy, for Little Flower Children's Services in Wading River. The Gold Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve.

Jessica is a member of the high school's Varsity volleyball team. She served as captain of her Junior Varsity team and is again in that leadership position as captain of her Varsity team.  She played travel volleyball for the Long Island Fury Team, and served as captain for that team as well.  She has also played Brookhaven Town volleyball and for the Miller Place Pride Lacrosse Team.

Post is an avid community volunteer, having worked each year to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness through her volleyball team's annual Dig Pink event, participating in numerous charity events through her Girl Scout troop and participating in her high school's Safe Halloween program to benefit the younger children of the community. She is also an American Red Cross certified pool lifeguard.

For the past two summers, Jessica has worked as a senior counselor at the North Shore Youth Council.  She is planning to major in business when she heads off to college in the fall and hopes to eventually be employed in New York City.

Spoken like a true teacher. Did you know that the average school teacher is only paying 15% of theRead More actual cost of health care premiums for themselves and their families, when Medical healthcare insurance premiums are rising at an alarming 17% per annum? Do you realize that teachers are paid an additional stipend if they work more than 3 consecutive periods in a day? Are you aware that teacher pensions were protected during the stock market crash of 2008, when the average person's 401K was totally at risk? Perhaps if teachers realized how good they have it - look at the BIG picture and outside of their bubble - then they would complain less. Oh and yes, we need our loftily-paid Administrators to kick in some of the salaries, to help pay for stuff. Hard to believe the school districts' mantras that "it's all for the kids".
