Guide to Finding Fitness

A simple and brief guide to finding a fitness class in your community.

Nowadays almost everywhere you go, the topic of conversation is fitness. Whether it’s the newest workout or rapid loss diet plan, everyone is talking. As a martial artist for the past 16 years, I’ve seen and experienced a lot of these new trends.  Friends and family continuously ask my advice on what to do and where to go. Here I have outlined some of the major points and questions you should be asking when speaking to trainers, instructors, etc.

Safety is No Accident

Always be sure to ask instructors and trainers how they intend to protect you from injury during workouts. Some high intensity workouts are extremely effective at getting you in great shape, but place a lot of tension and strain on joints. If you have weak knees, lower back, etc, a professional should advise whether their program is suitable for you. They will also be able to modify exercises for individuals with prior injuries or limitations.

Contracts Lack Confidence

Not always, but often if a fitness studio is pushing you into long term contracts this could be a sign that they are not confident in their programs. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a contract with a workout class you don’t like. Or even worse, getting monthly charges for a class you don’t attend!

Onward and Upward

If you are a beginner when it comes to working out, you most certainly want to start from the ground up. It can be discouraging and also dangerous to jump into a program with other students who are months or even years ahead of you. You want to start with a program where you learn at your own pace, and are encouraged to practice at home. On the flip side, be weary of programs that never change! If it is always the same class, without becoming more challenging over time, you will eventually plateau and you will only maintain your initial results. You should always be competing with yourself to become stronger and healthier. Always ask about future classes and programs. Be sure there is progression in the workout.

Take it Easy

Rest is just as important as work. Be cautious of programs that want you working out every day, twice a day. If you do not take a break in between workouts, the body will not recover and you will stay sore and fatigued for long periods of time. If you’re a beginner and you’re being pushed to workout everyday they may just be trying to sell you.

These are simply a few things to be aware of when choosing a workout. Some people like the boot camp, yelling and degrading style of exercise. I have personally never subscribed to this practice. I feel it is just as important to be healthy mentally and emotionally, as well as physically. Be sure to look for a class that addresses all three.
