Jets Loss Stymies Super Bowl Excitement

Fans will still watch game despite disappointment

The Super Bowl has become a national holiday of sorts as people all around the country gather around their televisions huddled over pounds and pounds of food. With theatric halftime shows and commercials that provide the most entertainment for some, it’s become more than the game.

Going around Miller Place, Rocky Point and Sound Beach, however, it seems that a New York Jets loss in the AFC Championship Game to the Pittsburgh Steelers has tempered the excitement for the big game, while one lifelong sports fan has become so disillusioned with the game that since the Jets lost he likely won’t even be watching Sunday.

“I’ve had season tickets to the Mets, Knicks, Nets and the Islanders and the Super Bowl never really interests me,” said Charles Matigceck as he read through the sports section of the paper. “I find it to be overkill. It’s become a national holiday…everybody becomes an expert all of a sudden.”

While Matigceck isn’t a big fan of the Super Bowl in general, his interest in this year's game completely evaporated after the Jets lost.

“I grew up in the shadow of Shea Stadium and I remember trying to sneak in to the stadium when the Jets played Oakland in 1968 and then went on to the Super Bowl,” he said. “That was the one I watched with great interest. [Had the Jets made it] I would’ve watched it with more interest only because it’s good for New York, now I doubt I’ll even watch it.”

Bob from Middle Island added his own spin on the game when asked for his prediction.

“I don’t really have a prediction,” he said. “I’m a Minnesota Vikings fan but I was excited about the Jets. Once they lost I kind of lost all interest but I have a Super Bowl box with the numbers six and nine so I’ll definitely be watching.”

Despite the widespread disappointment from a Jets loss, it’s tough to avoid the excitement that a day of football, food and maybe a little gambling can provide. Steve from Shoreham was finally one to offer up his prediction for the game.

“I’m going 27-20 Packers,” he said. “I just don’t think that Green Bay is going to be stopped. You saw the Jets [against Pittsburgh]. They didn’t even show up for the first half and they still managed to score 20 in the second half. Pittsburgh, I think their string ran out last week.”
