Sports Roundup: Little League Opens, Local Grad Throws Perfect Game

A look at the local sports scene and local college athletes.

A local college athlete recently made headlines, and there were a few noteworthy happenings in the local sports scene as well.

graduate Brittany Stevenson and sophomore at Haverford College tossed a perfect game April 5 to lead the Haverford varsity softball team to a 7-0 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College. Stevenson faced just 15 batters in the five inning game and struck out six.

The held its opening day April 14 as teams ushered in the season with a full slate of games. Former Major Leaguer and Smithtown product Frank Catalanotto was on hand to speak with the young ballplayers, joined by local politicians Sen. Ken LaValle, Legis. Sarah Anker and Councilwoman Jane Bonner.

After starting the season a perfect 5-0, the Shoreham-Wading River girls lacrosse team lost its first game of the year Tuesday. The Wildcats fell to Mt. Sinai, 8-5.
