Panthers Notebook: Boys Lax Still Alive, Softball Wins Again

Boys lacrosse remains in playoff hunt despite two losses, softball gets set for playoffs with two more wins.

Boys Lacrosse

The Panthers fell to 6-6 with two League II losses during the week.

On Wednesday, May 11, they lost 8-5 to Eastport-South Manor (10-3, 12-3) and on Friday, May 13, they suffered a 10-5 defeat at the hands of Harborfields (8-3).

In Wednesday’s loss, the Panthers were down by one heading into the fourth before three ESM goals put the game out of reach. Jack Martocello led the Panthers with two goals in the game.

On Friday, four third quarter goals by Harborfields put the game out of reach despite a solid performance by Jeff Reh with three goals.

The Panthers remain alive in the playoff hunt at 6-6 and play Sayville (7-6, 8-6) on Tuesday, May 17 at home at 4 p.m.

Girls Lacrosse

After an 18-16 win in two overtimes against Westhampton Monday, the Panthers (5-8, 6-9) fell, 15-13 to Sayville (10-2, 13-2) on Thursday.

Kristen Ierna scored six times in the Panthers’ victory over Westhampton and Casey Browne had seven points with four goals and three assists.

Emily Meier was too much to overcome for the Panthers as she led Sayville with eight goals, while Browne led MP with six goals and two assists.

The Panthers finish their season on Monday, May 16 at home against Southampton (0-13) at 4:30 p.m.

Softball

The varsity softball team improved to 11-5 with two more wins, a 15-1 victory over Glenn (0-16) Monday and a 5-0 win over Rocky Point (5-12) Thursday.

Freshman Tori Carlo earned the win and Marlaina Sherman hit her fifth home run of the year in the win over Glenn. The Panthers’ other starter, eighth-grader Jackie Gallagher, pitched a shutout and had a career high 13 strikeouts in the win over Rocky Point Thursday.

The Panthers finish off the regular season with three games this week starting on Monday, May 16 at 4:30 p. against East Hampton (10-7).

Baseball

The Panthers swept a three-game series over Westhampton to improve to 8-7 on the season.

Justin Willig earned the Game 1 win, 11-3, with seven strikeouts. In Game 2, Nick Acevedo struck out 12 in a three-hitter, 8-0 victory. Cody McPartland notched 11 strikeouts in a complete game in Thursday’s 8-3 win to complete the sweep.

The Panthers close out the season with a three-game series against East Hampton (8-7) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Track and Field

The boys fell to Shoreham-Wading River, 90-60 and the girls lost, 95-55 against SWR in Tuesday’s meet. The boys finish the season 3-2 in League VI; the girls finished 4-1 in second place behind SWR, who went 6-0.

Badminton

The boys badminton team defeated Patchogue-Medford, 7-2 Tuesday before losing to Whitman, 7-2 Thursday.

The girls (4-5) took down Pat-Med 6-3 and lost to Whitman 8-1. They finish their season with a game against Commack Tuesday and at Half Hollow Hills Thursday.
