Summer Programs Announced for Marine Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach

Summer programs study the history, geology and ecology of Cedar Beach and also cater to children.

A schedule of summer environmental and educational programs at the Mount Sinai Harbor Marine Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach has recently been announced.

The town-sponsored programs, which begin on July 10 and run to August 30, cover the history, geology and ecology of Cedar Beach as well as children’s activities, crafts, nature hikes and more.

In addition, the Center is open every Thursday from July 11 through August 29 (except August 15) from noon to 3 p.m. Adults and children alike can enjoy the various displays, make a beach craft to take home and visit the animals in the touch tanks.

“The Marine Stewardship Center is a real jewel of the north shore,” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner. “The programs that we offer give families the opportunity to be up close with nature and learn how important it is to protect and preserve the environment.”     

The schedule of programs is as follows: 

• July 10 at 6 p.m. – Ecology of Cedar beach Walking Tour presented by Eileen Gerle, Town of Brookhaven.

• July 31 at 6 p.m. – Geological Origins of Cedar Beach presented by Assemblyman Steve Englebright.

• August 7 at 6 p.m. –  History of Cedar Beach presented by Barbara Russell, Town of Brookhaven historian.

• Growing Up Wild - An age appropriate program that will include marine animals, crafts, stories and nature hikes. and activities. Parents must accompany 3-8 year olds and are welcome to join 9-12 year old group. This program is conducted by Town of Brookhaven Environmental Educator Eileen Gerle.

Ages 3-5: 10-11 a.m., July 19, 26, August 2, 23, 30. 
Ages 6-8: Noon–1 p.m., July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9, 23, 30.
Ages 9-12: 2-3 p.m., July 12, 19, 26, August 2, 9, 23, 30.

• Group Seining Activity – August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. Program meets at marshy area across the street from the Marine Stewardship Center.
